The Laughingstock is not your ordinary comedy open mic. Our goal: a funny mic anyone would enjoy, to pull in more people and give comics a better audience and our host venues enough business that they let us tie up valuable space for a couple of hours a week.
How do we make a comedy open mic fun? First, as one comic said, it feels like a real show. We have an ebullient emcee, serious sound and lighting, and best of all a drummer on stage to lend support!
Second, the two-minute drill: everyone gets up for two minutes in quick succession, then rinse and repeat: another round of two minutes each. This way everyone gets up before a full room and the energy stays high. As the rounds go on people riff off each other's stuff more and more. Comics on stage are doing crowd work with the audience of comics. Everyone is looking for a topper and the callbacks are flying. Good nights end up in pandemonium.
Like we said: not your ordinary open mic. Those are fine if you need to polish your five minutes, but there are a hundred mics for that in NYC. Our mic is for novices looking for a supportive room and veterans who want to relax for once and have some fun and practice their crowd work or ability to improvise.
So far the comics tell us it is working. We have fun with eight comics or sixteen.Virgins have a great experience and hardcore comics say it is the most fun they have ever had at an open mic.
Fun is good. Come join us and see if it works for you.
